Choisir pixel pitch for an outdoor LED display is a calculation, not a preference. P10 is not “worse” than P4 — it is correct for a different viewing distance. This guide maps each pitch grade to the scene it is built for, so you stop paying for resolution a driver’s eye can never see and stop under-specifying a screen people walk past at close range.

Outdoor LED pixel pitch comparison from P4 to P10 showing viewing distance where pixels become indistinguishable

Points clés à retenir
  • The rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance in metres ÷ 1,000 = maximum pixel pitch in millimetres. A 10m minimum distance means P10 is fine.
  • Pitch is driven by the closest viewer, not the average one — one person standing 3m from a P10 billboard is your real spec constraint.
  • Finer pitch costs more per square metre with no visible benefit past the point where pixels resolve — overspecifying is wasted budget.
  • Resolution and pitch are not the same thing: a P10 screen can carry more total pixels than a P4 screen if the wall is large enough.

01 — The Starting Point

The Formula That Answers Every Pitch Question

Outdoor LED pixel pitch calculation showing distance divided by 1000 equals maximum pitch in millimeters

Outdoor pixel pitch selection starts from one number you already have: the distance d'observation minimale — how close the nearest person will stand to the screen. The rule of thumb used across the industry is simple:

/* VIEWING DISTANCE → PIXEL PITCH */
minimum viewing distance (m) ÷ 1,000 = max pixel pitch (mm)
Example: 10 m minimum distance → P10 is sufficient
Example: 6 m minimum distance → P6 is the limit
Example: 4 m minimum distance → P4 or finer

This is a conservative guideline, not a hard law — it already builds in a margin so the pixel structure is genuinely invisible at that distance. Reversed, it tells you what a given pitch buys: P10 resolves cleanly from about 10 metres, P6 from 6 metres, P4 from 4 metres.

Use the Closest Viewer, Not the Average

A billboard on a highway is viewed from 20–50 metres, but a pedestrian plaza in front of it might bring people within 6 metres. Your pitch is constrained by the single closest viewer, not the typical one. If anyone can approach the face, specify for that distance. For the indoor equivalent of this logic, see our viewing distance guide.

02 — What Each Grade Buys

P10 to P4: Matching Each Pitch to Its Scene

Here is how the standard outdoor pitch grades map to real installations. The “sweet spot” column is the scene each grade is genuinely built for — not a marketing tier.

The question is not “what is the best pitch?” but “how close can someone get?” Answer that, and the pitch grades sort themselves out in under a minute.

03 — When Outdoor Goes Fine

Fine Pitch Outdoor: The FO Series and the Semi-Outdoor Edge Case

Outdoor LED used to mean “big pitch, far away.” That changed with semi-outdoor environments — covered transit concourses, retail canopies, and kiosk-scale screens where people stand within two metres. At that distance, P4 or P6 shows visible pixel structure, and you need fine pitch.

The FO Series covers P1.2 to P2.5 for exactly these situations. Because it is viewed up close, it pairs fine pitch with IP66 protection on both faces — these screens get cleaned and touched far more than a billboard thirty metres up. The trade-off is brightness: FO runs at 3,500–4,000 nits, which is correct for covered or semi-outdoor light but not for direct midday sun.

The Decision Line

If the screen is under a roof or in permanent shade AND people stand within 2.5 metres, fine pitch (FO) is right. If it faces direct sun at any point, you are back in the Square 960/1000 range at P4 and above — because daylight legibility outranks resolution in full sun. Pitch and luminosité are chosen together, never in isolation.

04 — Two Different Numbers

Pitch Is Not Resolution — Don’t Confuse Them

A common mistake is treating pixel pitch as a quality score, where a smaller number is always better. Pitch is a densité, not a total. Resolution is the product of pitch and physical size, and a large P10 wall can carry more total pixels than a small P4 wall.

/* PITCH vs RESOLUTION — SAME 10m WIDE WALL */
P10 → 10m ÷ 0.010m = 1,000 px across
P6 → 10m ÷ 0.006m ≈ 1,667 px across
P4 → 10m ÷ 0.004m = 2,500 px across

Two consequences follow. First, finer pitch drives up processor and cabling cost — more pixels per cabinet means more receiving cards and more data. Second, a billboard viewed from 30 metres shows aucune visible difference between P6 and P4, yet P4 costs noticeably more per square metre and needs more processing. That is wasted budget.

Run the numbers for your own wall with our calculatrice à affichage LED — input your dimensions and viewing distance, and it returns the pixel pitch and processor count your project actually needs.

05 — Where the Money Goes

The Cost Curve: Why Finer Pitch Costs More Than You Think

Finer pitch raises cost in three compounding ways, and the third is the one most buyers miss:

  1. More LEDs per square metre. Halving the pitch quadruples the LED count. A P4 panel carries roughly six times the LEDs of a P10 panel of the same size.
  2. More receiving cards and processing. Each card drives a fixed pixel budget. Finer pitch means more cards per wall and a higher-spec video processor.
  3. Higher mounting and structural cost. Finer-pitch cabinets are denser and often heavier per square metre, which affects the steel structure and installation labour.

This is why the honest recommendation is the coarsest pitch that still resolves cleanly at your minimum viewing distance — not the finest one you can afford. See how all these variables stack into the final figure in our cost-composition guide.

06 — Stop Guessing

Two Numbers, and an Engineer Hands You the Spec

You do not need to become a pixel-pitch expert. You need two numbers, and a supplier who can turn them into a recommendation in the same day:

Number 1 — Screen Size

The physical width and height in metres. This sets the cabinet layout and the total pixel load.

Number 2 — Closest Viewing Distance

The nearest point any viewer can stand. This sets the pitch. Distance ÷ 1,000 = your maximum pitch in mm.

Intervention d'un ingénieur le jour même

Send those two numbers and an engineer replies same day with the pitch, a brightness recommendation matched to your orientation, and a mounting reference. Pixel pitch is a calculation — what takes judgement is pairing it correctly with brightness, thermal design and service access.

Ready to compare the products themselves? Start at the outdoor LED display hub, or read how front vs rear service affects the same mounting decision.

Have your screen size and viewing distance ready?

Send them over. An engineer confirms the right pixel pitch, brightness and mounting spec — same day, with a preliminary price.

Use the rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance in metres divided by 1,000 equals the maximum pixel pitch in millimetres. A 10-metre minimum distance means P10 is fine, 6 metres means P6, 4 metres means P4. The pitch is set by the closest viewer, not the average one.

Yes, when the closest viewer is about 10 metres away. P10 is the correct, cost-efficient grade for highway billboards and large rooftop DOOH viewed from 10 metres or more. At that distance the pixel structure is invisible, so paying for a finer pitch buys no visible improvement — only extra processing and cabling cost.

P6 resolves cleanly from about 6 metres, P10 from about 10 metres. Choose P6 when pedestrians can approach within 6–10 metres of the screen, such as a storefront or urban DOOH panel. The finer pitch means roughly 2.8 times the pixels per square metre, which also raises processing and structural cost.

Use fine pitch for semi-outdoor, close-viewing environments — covered transit concourses, retail canopies, kiosk-scale screens — where people stand within 2.5 metres. That is the FO Series range (P1.2–P2.5, IP66). If the screen faces direct sun, you are back in the Square 960/1000 range at P4 and above, because daylight legibility outranks resolution in full sun.

No. Pitch is pixel density; resolution is density multiplied by physical size. A large P10 wall can carry more total pixels than a small P4 wall. Finer pitch raises cost in three ways — more LEDs per square metre, more receiving cards and processing, and often heavier cabinets — so the correct choice is the coarsest pitch that still resolves at your minimum viewing distance.

Halving the pitch roughly quadruples the LED count per square metre, and each receiving card drives a fixed pixel budget so finer pitch needs more cards and a higher-spec processor. Denser cabinets also affect the steel structure and installation labour. All three compound, which is why overspecifying pitch is wasted budget with no visible benefit past the resolution point.

Take your closest viewing distance in metres and divide by 1,000 to get the maximum pitch in millimetres. Then pick the coarsest available pitch at or below that number. Input your exact dimensions and distance into our LED display calculator to get the pitch and processor count your project actually needs.
